QUOTATIONS OF SACRED SCRIPTURE ABOUT SPIRITUAL CHILDHOOD

To became like children

Matthew 18:1-5

At that time, the disciples came to Jesus, saying:

– Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

And calling to him an child, he put him in the midst of them, and said:

– Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

Mark 9:33-37

And they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them:

– What were you discussing on the way?

But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them:

– If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.

And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them:

– Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.

Luke 9:46-48

An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hears, he took a child and put him by his side, and said to them:

– Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great.

Scandal of the little ones

Matthew 18:6

– Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Mark 9:42

– Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

Luke 17:1-3

– Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little one to sin.

Blessing of the little ones

Matthew 19:13-15

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said:

– Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.

And he laid his hands on them and went away.

Mark 10:13-16

They were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them:

– Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall no enter it.

And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

Luke 18:15-17

They were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to him saying:

– Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.

Their angels behold the face of my Father

Matthew 18:10

– See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 18:14

– So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

The wisdom of the little ones

Matthew 11:25

– I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things for the wise and understanding, and revealed them to babes.

Luke 10:21

– I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes.

Out of the mouth of babes

Matthew 21:15-16

When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant; and they said to him:

– Do you hear what these are saying?

And Jesus said to them:

– Yes; have you never read, “Out of the mouth of babes and suckling you have brought perfect praise?”

Like a hen gathers her brood

Matthew 23:37

– O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

Luke 13:34

– O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

Nicodemus

John 3:1-8

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him:

– Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.

Jesus answered him:

– Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus said to him:

– How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?

Jesus answered:

– Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, you must be born anew. The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whether it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the spirit.

Abba, Father

Romans 8:15-17

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

The pure spiritual milk

1 Peter 2:1-2

So put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander. Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

He plays with us

Proverbs 8:30-31

I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world, and delighting in the sons of men.
